DescriptionThis is a Society of Arts Prize microscope made by J. Hicks of London.
The claw-foot base is of blackened brass and supports two curvy upright bright brass pillars. The inclining joint is attached at the top of the pillars to the underside of the stage. A cylindrical post extends above and below the stage. The upper part has rack and pinion to raise and lower a triangular post to which is attached a horizontal limb. The straight body tube screws into the limb. Fine focus is by means of a screw that operates on a lever just above the objective on the body tube. Coarse focus is by rack and pinion.
The square stage has a super-stage, sliding damascened plate with left and right handles and spring clips underneath the stage; it holds slides by means of two stage clips. Two pieces of black wool felt cushion it. There is a rotating substage wheel diaphragm of blackened brass The plano-concave mirror moves up and down on the substage post on a blackened sleeve.
There is one ocular and one convertible objective.
The base is fixed to a round platform with a glass dome.
