Description:
One arm has two sets of scale units: "Demy Pied de Roy" and "Demy Pied du Rhin". the other arm has a diagonal scale for precision measurement. A hinge joins the two rulers together. There is also a cutout window to be used with a plumb line.

The instrument forms a square when open.

FunctionSuch a ruler was used to make simple measurements and, with a pair of dividers, to convert results from one scale unit to another. Unfolded, this rule could serve as a set square. The plumb line was added for leveling purposes.
