DescriptionA magnetic telegraph instrument, called a single needle telegraph, mounted on an L-shaped stand. The stand consists of a rectangular, horizontal, four-footed wooden base attached to a vertical backboard with a pointed arched top. The instrument is made by Wheatstone and Cooke.
The instrument has a white rectangular dial vertically mounted on a horizontal brass bracket affixed to the backboard of the device. The dial has a double pointed brass needle mounted on a center spindle, which is connected to a galvanometer coil, and is designed to move a short distance to left or right. A pair of needle shaped contact points are mounted on the lower part of the dial at a 30° angle to the center spindle. A coiled wire extends from each contact point to each one of a pair of brass binding posts mounted on the lower left of the backboard. A row of four brass binding posts is mounted along the front edge of the base; flat copper strips connect the binding posts to each other and to a center handle unit.
