FunctionThis galvanometer was used in the Department of Engineering at Harvard to detect and measure electrical current. Current is introduced into a movable coil with an attached needle suspended between the poles of a permanent U-shaped magnet, which induces a magnetic field that causes the coil to rotate in proportion to the current, and the deflection of the needle can then be read on the scale.
