Historical AttributesThis microscope is the first one owned by Dr. Frederick Thomas Lewis (1875-1951), curator of the Ernst-Lewis collection. He bequeathed it to Harvard University.
Note on the card reads: "This is Dr Lewis' own microscope but in keeping with his modesty he had not entered it as an item of the collection. Frederick Thomas Lewis (1875-1951) Harvard A B (magna cum) 1897; M.D. (cum) 1901. Taught at the medical school for 40 years continuously. He remained actively interested as Prof. Emeritus for the subsequent 10 years at which time he was working primarily with this microscope collection. During the 50 year span of his association at the Medical School he was publishing profusely. He was a distinguished writer and medical historian and a distinguished contributor to embryology. The collection of microscopes, which he arranged to place on permanent exhibit in the anatomy bldg., his collection of memorabilia dealing with the early days of the School, and his library which he bequeathed to the university are examples of his devotion."
