Historical AttributesThis surveying instrument was used by Augustin Joseph (Bud) Crawford (1911-1999), a surveyor in Essex County, Massachusetts.
Crawford was the son of an Irishman who came over to the United States on a tramp steamer. He served in the Navy during World War II, and chose bombing targets from survey aerial photographs. After the war, he attended Northeastern University. He lived in Salem and then Danvers, earning his living as a road surveyor in Essex County.
The instruments have been in the Crawford family for three generations. Bud Crawford passed them first to his son, David Crawford, who used to help his father in his surveying work. After David Crawford passed away in 2007, his widow, Pauline (Collette) Crawford, arranged for their son, Jason Crawford to donate the instrument to CHSI.
