Date: 1840-1860
Inventory Number: 2007-1-0435
Classification: Polarization Apparatus
Dimensions:3.9 × 11.7 × 12.3 cm (1 9/16 × 4 5/8 × 4 13/16 in.)
DescriptionThis instrument consists of a square plate of blackened brass mounted on a brass tube with 4.5 cm outer diameter. The tube has longitudinal slits and is designed to fit into an optical tube assembly attached to a projector or viewing eyepiece.
On top of the square plate there is a split objective lens held in a split brass collar.
One half of the collar is screwed to the plate and pushed laterally by a steel screw with a knurled brass head. Opposing the screw on the other side of the collar is a steel spring.
The other half of the collar is screwed to a slide which is moved in a track by means of a spring-loaded steel screw with a knurled brass head. The operation of this screw is perpendicular to that of the screw that acts on the other half of the collar.
The split lens is held securely in the brass collar that moves in the track. There is black paper between the lens bottom and the brass cell.
The other half of the split lens is loose it its cell and was secured by wax in the past. A lot of wax remains.
