DescriptionA needle force gauge made by Acoustic Research, Inc. The device is used to balance a stereo tone arm, by adjusting the pressure that a stereo's needle would exert on the record's surface.

The gauge, made of clear plastic, is essentially a balance, and consists of a flat, stepped balance arm, a separate tent-shaped fulcrum and a set of four disk-shaped clear plastic weights. The weights are marked in grams on their top faces, "1/4; 1/2; 1; 2." To use the balance, the arm would be balanced on the fulcrum and a weight placed on one end of the arm. The needle-bearing cartridge on the end of the stereo's tone arm would rest on the other end of the balance. A counterweight on the stereo arm could be adjusted using the needle force gauge as a guide.

The instrument is housed in a hinged plastic case with a black lower half and clear lid. The lid is stamped in red with the stylized logo "AR INC." The lower part is fitted with a small block of shaped foam which holds the instrument in position.
