The Ultropak light-source attachment is present and stored in a red cardboard box with a hinged lid marked "Leitz" and "Ultropak." The low voltage bulb (8 volt, 0.6 amp) is held in a metal housing by a knurled screw, and the housing is centerable in the changing device by means of 3 more screws. The electrical cord is wrapped in braided cord and has a 2 prong plug. (The plug mates with the adjustable transformer, 2009-1-0071). A wooden fitting in the box holds 2 spare light bulbs; 2 blackened brass diaphragms with rotating sectors (aka "sector shutters"); 5 glass disk filters (ground white glass, daylight, heat absorption blue, green, and yellow); and a pin driver.

Historical AttributesUsed by William A. Jackson, first librarian of Houghton Library.
When Houghton Library opened in 1942, Jackson invested in a lot of state-of-the-art equipment for examining books and investigating them. The apparatus included microscopes, black lights, and special lamps.
This particular type of instrument was made as early as 1935, but this one was not purchased until 1950. The earlier date is found in Leitz catalogues related to the Ultropak system. The later date is found on a packing list. These accompanied the microscope kit and are in the CHSI instrument file.
