DescriptionThis is a metallic eight-drawer cabinet marked at the top on tape: ATHENAEUM. It contains various types of photographic images that were used by Edwin Land in his study of color vision, which led to the Retinex theory. These were most likely used with projectors and instruments, like the monochromator, now part of the CHSI collection. (See related tab.) Following is a brief description of what the drawers contain.
Drawer 1 is marked: Still Life; Red, White & Blue; Portraits; Ann Robb's / Slides / [3drawers down) [sic]. *Mostly contains stereo glass slides of still life images.*
Drawer 2 is marked: Indoor Portraits / Framed / & / Landscapes; Tests / Test cont.; Tests / continued. *Mostly contains stereo glass slides and some other mounted in plastic. Separators indicate the categories of images used in Land's color vision studies.*
Drawer 3 is marked: Red, White, & Blue / J3-A4; Ann Robb's DOODLES. *Stereo glass slides of still life images, some mounted on Polaroid's plastic Slide Mount #630. The drawer is divided into categories of images used in Land's color vision studies. One of these is called "JOHN MC CANN", Land's long-time collaborator on the Retinex theory. Other slides are for the Long, Medium, Short wavelength studies related to Retinex.*
Drawer 4 is marked: BERMUDA EXPERIMENTS; JAMICA [sic] PICTURES; TONY DAVIES / SLIDES. *Stereo glass slides and others mounted in plastic on Polaroid's Slide Mount #630. Not sure though if these images are related to the title found on the drawer. The drawer is divided into categories of images used in Land's color vision studies.*
Drawer 5 is marked: Ann's / FOGG / PICTURES; KODACHROMES / EKTACHNOMES [sic]. *This drawer appears to be glass slides and plastic-mounted ones of paintings taken from the collection of the Fogg museum at Harvard. Separators indicate, for instance, Dutch paintings and Degas.*
Drawer 6 is marked: ONE EYED / STEREO; RETINAL / RIVALRY; ACUITY TEST. *Again, mounted on glass slides or plastic, images of still life and geometrical shapes. The separators inside match the drawer's titles, all dealing with Land research on color theory and vision.*
Drawer 7 is marked: VECTOGRAPH. *Glass slides and plastic-mounted ones. These studies of 3-D images go back to the early 1940 by Land. These slides are related to that topic.*
Drawer 8 is marked: Miscellaneous; B&W films &; Ektachrome slides. *This drawer, compared to the others, contains film reels and 35 mm slides. Use unknown.*
