FunctionThis is a working model of the hydraulic ram system for pumping water upwards. The funnel represents the stationary water source, with a main flow going downwards and out the lower valve at the end. When the water at that valve reaches a certain speed, the valve closes, forcing the remaining water in the system to push upwards through the side tube beyond the upper valve. This upper valve does not allow that water to get back to the main flow. Each time the lower valve closes, an amount of water is pushed upwards, even higher than the original input point. This is visualized by the side tube ending above the funnel and water dripping back into it, giving the impression of a perpetual motion machine.
