Description:
This is a set of Leitz Ultropak microscope objectives. There are a total of three objectives stored in orange cardboard boxes with wooden mounts.

The objectives are marked 11, 22, and 100 oel. The latter two have caps marked 22-100.

The objectives are epi objectives with a coaxially surrounding illumination system. The illumination system is separately focusable with respect to the objective. It forms a condenser out of a first lens with a central hole for the objective followed by another, smaller lens immediately surrounding the tip of the objective. In the low power (11x) objective the second lens is larger and closer to the first one. A special microscope tube is needed containing a 45 degree mirror for the illumination and a central hole for the imaging optical train.

Historical AttributesThis instrument was used in the Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.
Curatorial RemarksThe unusually simple but neatly made cardboard/wood boxes for these expensive objectives are surprising. They may indicate a date not long after 1945 when there was a shortage of everything in Germany and a desperate need for export earnings.
