FunctionThis is an apparatus used to demonstrate how the height of a column of a liquid determines its pressure. It was probably used with mercury, although any liquid would have worked, although on a narrower segment of the scale.
The user can alter both the height of the liquid container and that of the manometer, showing that what matters is the different in height between them. If used with mercury, the manometer will indicate exactly this height difference on the scale.
