12-inch, f/135 doublet objective lens
1996-1-0468 is a wooden storage box with a doublet lens consisting of crown- and flint-glass elements. These form a 12-inch objective lens for a telescope with a 135-foot focal length.
The lens elements are each stitched into a sleeve of cotton twill fabric that is flocked on the side facing the glass. The clothed elements are then stacked with a circle of fabric between them.
Surrounding the lens elements and cushioning them in the box was batting made of coarse, wiry, black animal hair with pieces of cotton. This batting showed signs of bug infestation and was removed as a conservation measure once it was documented photographically. A sample of the animal hair is preserved in a plastic bag.
