Darling, Brown, and Sharpe

David Brown and Son was founded by David Brown and his son Joseph R. Brown, in 1868 and the firm made and repaired clocks, watches and mathematical instruments. The partnership dissolved after 8-10 years and in 1850 David Brown started a new line. In 1853 Lucian Sharpe was taken into the partnership and the firm became J.R. Brown and Sharpe. Mr. Brown was the mechanical expert and Mr. Sharpe was the business executive. In 1866 Samuel Darling, a rival and competitor of the firm, finally joined forces with Brown, which resulted in the business changing names to Darling, Brown & Sharpe.

In 1896 this name was discontinued after Mr. Darling died and the name was discontinued, and in1868 the business was incorporated under the name of Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co.
