Founded in 1876 by Melville Dewey, who is best known for his pioneering role in the organization of libraries, book classification and the librarian profession in the United States. He was one of the champions of the metric system and a member of the American Metrical Society.
The purpose of the American Metric Bureau was to sell rulers, barometers, thermometers, conversion charts and other devices that fostered the adoption of the metric system.
