James Bowdoin III
1752 - 1811
The son of James Bowdoin II and graduate of Harvard College in 1771, James Bowdoin III also served in the Massachusetts legislature. When Bowdoin College was established in 1794 and named in honor of his father, Governor Bowdoin, he gave the school land and money. On his death in 1811, he bequeathed his library, papers, mineral collection, scientific apparatus, and art collection to the college as well.
