John Jeffries
John Jeffries (Harvard AB 1763) was an American-born physician and anatomist. He was a British loyalist who fled the American Revolution and settled in England. he became an "aeronaut" in the 1780s, when balloons were a new and exciting invention in Europe. Whe he and a Frenchman crossed the English Channel in a balloon in 1785, Jeffries delivered to Benjamin Franklin the world's first air mail letter, a message from Franklin's estranged loyalist son, William.
