The Collège de France was so named in 1870. It was founded in 1530 by King Francis I but called Collège Royal, and then Collège des Trois Langues. It was an academic institution deisged to provide an alternative to the Sorbonne and to promote the learning of ancient languages like Hebrew and Ancient Greek, and the study of mathematics.
