John Bliss & Company
1857 - 1956
This business had its origins in a series of instrument-making firms started by John Bliss, Senior (1795-1857). Bliss was in partnership with watchmaker Frederick Creighton from about 1836 until 1853. When his partnership with Creighton dissolved in 1853, Bliss took is eldest son, John Bliss, Jr. into the firm as a partner, forming John Bliss and Son. When the elder Bliss died in 1857, his son continued the firm as John Bliss and Company. Partners and staff included George Bliss and other Bliss family members.
The firm made chronometers, nautical instruments, and surveying instruments.
