The company Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation (Corporation for Aniline Production) was founded in 1867 in Rummelsburg, Germany as a manufacturer of dyes and stains. It became a public limited company in 1873. The founders were Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy (son of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy) and Carl Alexander von Martius.
In 1897, the Agfa trademark appeared.
In 1925, Agfa became part of IG Farben. It was broken up by the Allies after World War II, and Agfa emerged as a separate business in 1945.
