John Carbutt
1832 - 1905
Born in Sheffield in 1832, John Carbutt came to Philadelphia in 1853. He was a chemist and scientific photographer. He was first president of the Photographers' Association of America. Among his inventions was the orthochromatic plate. In 1879, he perfected what became known as the Carbutt dry plate.
From 1879, he was doing business as Keystone Dry Plate Works.
