Acoustic Research Inc. was founded in 1952 by audio inventor Edgar Villchur and his student Henry Kloss.
In 1956, the company patented an air suspension woofer to solve the problem of bass distortion. Other inventions included improved woofer and tweeter designs, a high current amplifier, the first belt drive turntable and the first multi-driver vertical loudspeaker.
In 2004, the company was sold to Audiovox Corporation, a subsidiary of Thomson SA.
