Sir Godfrey Kneller
Born Gottfried Kniller in 1646 Lübeck, Germany, Sir Godfrey Kneller was England's leading portrait painter during his lifetime. He trained in Leiden and Amsterdam before moving to Hamburg. In 1674 Kneller moved again, to England; in 1780 he was appointed court painter. Kneller also opened an art academy in London.
Among Kneller's works was a collection of 48 portraits of the members of the Kit-Cat Club—all political or academic luminaries.
Kneller died in 1723.
