Taken by Arabs 642; fell to Mongols early 1200s; captured by Tamerlane who massacred 70,000 people after an uprising 1388; rebuilt & beautified under Sh$01ah `Abb$01as the Great who ruled from 1588 to 1629; declined after fall to Ghilzay Afghans 1722.
